A roof deck is the roofing material layer lying between the primary structural components and the insulated layers or the weatherproofing layers in a typical roof system. The roof deck usually ties all the structural components of your roof together. The roof deck is the MOST important part of your roof, just like the foundation of your home is the most important part of its structure.
A roof deck must be clean prior to re-roofing, and it must be nail-able. Shingles will take the shape of the roof deck below them. Even if shingles are installed correctly, and a roof deck is not broken, it can still lie uneven and make your roof look horrible. Solutions to an uneven roof deck would be to install new decking or use shingles with more definition to possibly block some of the uneven appearance.
The Dreaded 1x Deck
If you don’t have a 1x deck, congratulations! However, if you do have a 1x deck, then continue reading for some important information.
Many homes built prior to the mid-1990s were built with 1x roof decks. Now, almost all homes are built with the updated OSB roof decks. Unqualified roofing contractors will not pay attention to problems inherent with 1x roof decks. Nor will they educate you on it. Unfortunately, on a 1x roof deck, the extent of broken boards cannot be determined until the old shingles have been removed, and the amount of repairs to the roof deck will vary.
With the dreaded 1x roof decks, there are lasting effects. Even when broken boards are replaced, more boards may break when installing new shingles and your repair costs could rise. However, you have a few options. The cheapest option is to replace broken boards and hope no more will break and your shingles will lay flat. The most effective solution is to install a new OSB deck.
