It’s important to do regular inspections of your roof. Sometimes, fixing damage quickly can mean the difference between a small repair and costly damages to the interior of your home. It may seem like the best way to inspect your roof for damage is to climb up on the structure, but this should be left to professional Oklahoma roofers. Here are some tips on how you can determine whether your roof is damaged without taking the risk of climbing up there.
Around the Perimeter
Walk around the house and look for telltale signs of a crumbling roof. Check for pieces of shingles on the ground under the eaves. Look around the downspouts for black residue that can indicate a loss of protective granules.
From a Distance
Stand back and take a good look at the roof. Watch for sagging areas or spots that are buckling. Look for areas that appear darker, as these indicate a loss of granules and the possibility that shingles are compromised.
A Closer Look
Using binoculars, take a good look at the shingles. Look for any that are torn, missing edges, bent out of place or completely missing. A quality roofer has no problem replacing shingles, but if too many are gone you may be better off with a new roof. Take a look at the flashing around the roof to make sure it is still intact. It’s also a good idea to focus on the valleys to be sure the expansion channels are intact and do not have any tears or rips.
In the Attic
Interior inspections are a standard part of any roof inspection. Look for wet decking or damp insulation. Check around the roof for areas of light that are not directly created by a vent. If light is coming through, rain can also come through. Rust stains that travel down from nails are also indicators that a problem may exist.
In the House
The number one warning sign that you have a leaky roof is water stains on the ceiling. Unfortunately, by the time you are actually seeing water enter the home the problem has progressed and is more serious. Don’t wait to experience sticking doors and water stains before calling for an inspection, take the time to look outside the home for the warning signs.
